Berlin Buddy Bears

Kurfuerstendamm Bear

One of the more charming pieces of street art in Berlin are the Berlin Buddy Bears. These larger than life sculptures designed by many different artists travel the world as good-will ambassadors, but they can also be found at tourist sites, hotels, and unexpected places around Berlin.

3rd Floor Bear

I've been charmed by their unexpected appearance - and some of them are quite elaborate. For example, the bear in front of the zoo looks like this:

Electricity Bear

The associated electronic display shows electricity usage in the city. Pretty cool!

Other bears might take a different view of the world.

Pablo Bear

While also being very artistic (the Pablo being our friend Picasso of course).

The bear in front of the cafeteria at the Technical university got its head cut off by this photographer, but the body was the more interesting part so I'm including him anyway.

Study Buddy Bear
I took a special liking to this Zodiac bear in front of a hotel.

But I also enjoyed meeting the Charlottenburg bear on the median strip of a high-traffic street in front of the library.

The different embassies around town all have their own bears, as do many of the hotels. I'm starting to think that this might be the ultimate item to display in my front garden -- but maybe they're best viewed in the city where they belong.

  1. Lovely - like a meme in the built environment to look for! In Torquay I think it was, they had a similar thing with gorillas. I remember my grandkids went on a hunt for them with their dad and posted pictures to Facebook. It looked like they got tired of the meme before their dad did though, judging from the change in their expressions through the series of photos! At first I thought the electricity bear was going to be the zodiac - it is more clear to see what might be stars in the constellation in that style. Oh well!
